Haiti Relief T-shirt

haitishirtHaitiShirtGirl

This is a shirt that I designed for a fundraiser we are trying to organize for AIGA.  We opened it up as a contest for design/illustration students to submit entries, with the winner having their design screen printed (by us) onto shirts that we would sell on campus, with $5 from each shirt going to help Haiti crisis victims.  As of right now we are experiencing massive headaches trying to work with BSU and find our way through all of their red tape… to be honest I think it is silly that something meant to do good might not even happen because of all of their paperwork and hoops they make clubs jump through to do anything on campus… but we’ll see what happens.

Freelancing Fears Confronted

AIGA_Jodie_web

This is a poster I created for an upcoming AIGA BSU event.  We are having a local freelancer, Jodie Thiel, come speak to us about the business side of graphic design.  Topics covered will include contracts, invoices, marketing, networking and proposals.  I’m super excited :)

Vagina Monologues Poster

VDay_VM10-2This is a promotional poster I just finished for an event that the Women’s Center puts on every year called The Vagina Monologues.  Its main message is to create awareness about violence against women.  This is their 10 year anniversary, so they wanted a theme that could be carried through all of their events this year.  I decided to use their logo (the parenthesis and brackets…({ }) ) with a lot of whitespace.  I had to come up with this design in one day so I am pretty happy with how it came out :)

Student Org Fair

8.5x11_SOF_Web

This is a poster that I just finished for the Student Involvement and Leadership Center.  They are advertising for the annual spring organization fair.  I actually just sent this to print, so it isn’t even up on campus yet… but it will be soon!

Hands Across Campus

1

This is the front page for the last issue of the semester.  It is in response to racist and homophobic flyers that were put into issues of The Arbiter by some unknown perpetrators.  Between 150 and 200 students came together on campus and joined hands in a statement about acceptance and diversity on our campus.  Many signed a petition in support as well, so this cover design features students’ hand prints with some of the signatures over top.

Baphinctal

Baphinctal

So we were all given a made-up word this time around, and mine was ‘baphinctal’.  I actually thought that word sounded kind of gross so I decided to go in the complete opposite direction and do something cute and playful.  Childlike, if you will. So here it is :)

The Appleseed Cast- Peregrine

AppleseedCast

For this project we were asked to design a CD cover for a band of our choice- I chose The Appleseed Cast’s album Peregrine.  They are an indie band whose sound is very ambient and broody in nature.  It would be easy for their music to sound like pure chaos because they implement so many different sounds and elements, but they manage to create beautiful compositions.  I wanted the image to portray all of this, which is why I chose the color palette I did, as well as why I chose to make an overall image that is composed of many smaller shapes.  This project was a lot of fun to work on :)

My Autopsy

This is my first illustration of the semester… we had to choose an article from a magazine for our content.  I chose a poem called “My Autopsy.”  I’ve added it at the bottom if you are curious…

Living Within Two Cultures

Two_Cultures_Postcard

Two_Cultures_Wall

This is a project that I worked on for the Fine Arts Exhibition in the Student Union Building.  I had to create a postcard, wall vinyl, newspaper ad, kiosk ad, web banner, and student update that all correlated to advertise this event.  It is called “Living Within Two Cultures” and the featured artists are Jean You and Allison Corona.  The exhibit runs from September 3rd – October 18th 2009.

Included above is the postcard design, followed by an image of the installed wall vinyl on one of the gallery walls.

Idaho Pioneers Brochure

Here is my very first project working at the Student Union Building’s Promotions office. It is a brochure that was printed and dispersed for the opening of the J. R. and Esther Simplot Ballroom.  The inside was pretty much off limits- they wanted to keep it the same as the former version of the brochure.  I was able to redesign the cover though, so long as it kept in accordance with the design aesthetic of the interior.  It’s pretty simple and straight-forward in character…

New Look for The Arbiter!

Hey guys I know it has been a while since I posted, but this summer is crazy! As many of you know, I have five jobs that I am juggling… so it keeps me pretty busy! One thing that I have been working on this summer is the redesign of The Arbiter (Boise State’s student newspaper, for those who are not familiar). We have been working on it for a while, and our “pilot” issue hit the stands yesterday.

I am really excited about it; we decided to try something completely different and are going for more of a web 2.0 look, with more images and graphics. I was nervous about how our new look would come off the press- but decided that the summer is a good time to experiment if you are going to do it. I used a lot of gradients and color on the front page, curious about whether or not it would translate to print that well. I am pretty excited about the results… I am also pretty excited that the photography on the front page is also mine :)

So what do you think? Do you like the new look? Suggestions? Hit me up here or on Facebook!

Here are some pages that I designed over the past semester while working at The Arbiter.  The first two have been submitted to CMA for best design- we’ll see if they win any awards!

Wind and Water

This assignment revolved around designing a logo for an actual company here in Boise (chosen at random from a phone book), and then using it to create an identity in the form of a letterhead, business card, and envelope.  I decided to do a feng shui company.  I gave it the name Wind and Water, which is the literal translation of  ’feng shui.’  I have always been interested in this, especially since I majored in interior design for a year back in the day.  The deceiving thing about logos is that they look so simple; in reality they require a lot of research, thought, and time.  Maybe that is why I don’t like them? ;)

Miss Behave

Here is another project that I completed this last semester.  We were asked to design a label for a wine bottle.  I did a design for one of those mini wine bottles that you see on the shelves at the grocery store.  I just remembered how my girlfriends and I would sneak bottles of cheap wine into our dorm rooms back in the days of Driscoll Hall… ha ha good times.  I thought it would be fun to design a bottle that was marketed specifically for that audience.  Perhaps it isn’t the most practical audience but that is the great thing about school projects, isn’t it?  You get to do whatever you want :)  Besides… so many wine bottles have such banal designs, why not mix it up a bit?   ;)

Life Drawing

Life drawing is just another way of saying these are all my drawings of nudes.  They are from a while ago, but I decided it was time for them to see the light of day.  And yes… these were done for a class.  I am not a creeper.

Greenhouse Magazine

Okay, so here is an assignment for my graphic design class.  We were given the name ‘Greenhouse’  and told to create a cover, contents page, and two spreads.  Lucky for me my photography assignment had a similar theme, and I was able to use it as the cover art.

Design-A-Q

Hey guys!  So school is finally out for the summer and I am hoping I will have more time to add entries to this blog to keep it from getting too boring :)  I plan on putting up more of my graphic design projects from this semester since I haven’t done so yet, but for now here is a poster I designed last week for AIGA.  We are having a Design-A-Q (instead of a BBQ… nifty I know) where we will be meeting up with our mentors from the semester to wrap things up.  Should be fun!

If Trees Could Scream

I am really excited because this final diptych was chosen to be a part of an exhibit the BSU art program is hosting in Japan!  I won’t get to see it on display but it is still pretty sweet :)  Gotta love looking like a tree-lady-thing!  Perhaps it is a bit macabre but it’s all good…

Childhood Lost

My first project for the semester!  I just have to applaud my sister’s willingness to help me out!  It was pretty funny because we did this photo-shoot at the Old Penn, and there was a couple getting their engagement photos at the same time.  Seems like a weird location to get those kinds of photos but whatever floats their boat…  We just did our dark emo shots side by side and it all worked out :)
